This was much needed, Algazi argues, because early modern scholars exchanged the celibate lifestyle for a married life and in return had to solve the novel problem of combining study and running a family.<\/p>\n<p>This has lead to the creation of a separate study in which the scholar could retreat and devote all his attention to his scholarly work, having only his books and instruments to keep him company. It became very much the prototypical (self-)image of the scholar, that was copied by some artists as well. It survived in modern times, at least amongst literary scholars: the <span style=\"color:#333399;\"><strong><a style=\"color:#333399;\" title=\"Albert Verwey als academicus\" href=\"http:\/\/mariekewinkler.wordpress.com\/2014\/11\/06\/artikel-over-albert-verwey-als-academicus\/\">picture of Albert Verwey<\/a> <\/strong><\/span><span style=\"color:#000000;\">that I posted recently fits in perfectly. And what to think of contemporary (literary) scholars that like to depict themselves standing in front of a stuffed bookcase?<\/span><\/p>\n<p>When you look closer at the paintings of early modern scholars, like Algazi does in &#8216;At the Study: Notes on the Production of the Scholarly Self&#8217; (2012), you might notice that the scholar is not always without company. For example, Algazi draws our attention to the presence of the little dog in <span style=\"color:#333399;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">the study of St. Augustine:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/mariekewinkler.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/vittore_carpaccio_visione_di_santagostino_01.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-614\" src=\"https:\/\/mariekewinkler.wordpress.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/vittore_carpaccio_visione_di_santagostino_01.jpg?w=545\" alt=\"Vittore_carpaccio,_visione_di_sant'agostino_01\" width=\"545\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mariekewinkler.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/vittore_carpaccio_visione_di_santagostino_01.jpg 1059w, https:\/\/mariekewinkler.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/vittore_carpaccio_visione_di_santagostino_01-300x198.jpg 300w, https:\/\/mariekewinkler.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/vittore_carpaccio_visione_di_santagostino_01-1024x677.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/mariekewinkler.nl\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/vittore_carpaccio_visione_di_santagostino_01-768x508.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 545px) 100vw, 545px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color:#333399;\"><span style=\"color:#000000;\">But also in the study of<\/span><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><a style=\"color:#333399;\" href=\"http:\/\/nl.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Christine_de_Pizan#mediaviewer\/File:Christine_de_pisan.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Christine de Pizan<\/strong><\/a><\/span> and <strong><span style=\"color:#333399;\"><a style=\"color:#333399;\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Saint_Jerome_in_His_Study_(D%C3%BCrer)#mediaviewer\/File:D%C3%BCrer-Hieronymus-im-Geh%C3%A4us.jpg\" target=\"_blank\">St. Jerome<\/a>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><span style=\"color:#000000;\">we encounter the little dog (i<\/span>n this latter picture the dog is sleeping next to Jerome&#8217;s characteristic symbol, the Lion). Of course one can interpret the presence of the dog in many ways, but seen in the perspective of \u2018Learned Forgetfulness\u2019 it functions both as a positive confirmation and as a warning of the calmness and concentration that comes with proper scholarly work. The dog is watching attentively or sleeping peacefully but can awaken anytime, ready to ask immediate attention for its earthly needs. As such the little dog reminds the scholar of the world outside his study.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Learned Forgetfulness\u2019 is a trait, but should not become a flight from reality.<\/p>\n<p>On the 27<sup>th<\/sup> of November the Huizinga Institute organizes a <span style=\"color:#333399;\"><strong><a style=\"color:#333399;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.huizingainstituut.nl\/masterclass-gadi-algazi\/\">masterclass<\/a><\/strong><\/span> by Gadi Algazi. Historicizing the very idea of \u2018being a scholar\u2019, Algazi investigates shifts in the meaning of scholarly selfhood that occurred with changing circumstances of life and learning. In the masterclass we probably won&#8217;t be talking about little dogs.
